Cambodia is set to reach nation-wide electricity coverage by 2025 with the construction of 2 coal-fired power plants which have been approved in the National Assembly on 26 March 2020.
The approved laws will involve the Royal Group building a 700MW coal-fired power plant in Koh Kong valued at USD$1.4 billion, and a 265MW coal-fired power plant in Oddar Meanchey by Han Seng Coal Mine Co Ltd worth USD$265 million. Coincidentally, Koh Kong has launched its first coal plant last September.

According to the council, the investment projects are seen as a necessity to ensure adequate electricity supply in Cambodia, especially during dry season. The projects could also slash electricity costs for consumers across the Kingdom.
At present, over 500, 000 or 7% out of the 3.8 million houses across Cambodia has inadequate supply of electricity, according to the Ministry of Mines and Energy’s General Department of Energy Director-General Victor Jona. “First, we do what it takes to supply electricity across the Kingdom. Second, because electricity is at the heart of development, it will help create more jobs for our people,” said Jona, adding that the establishment of the two plants aimed to supply electricity to the remaining houses so that they will have electricity by 2024.

The ministry hopes that with these constructions, Cambodia will have adequate supply of electricity for its citizens by 2025. Business opportunities for Cambodia’s energy sector shines brightly as the Kingdom invests further in providing electricity for its growing economy.
